BBC online quizzes

Website of the day:  BBC online quizzes - a great website to learn English through interesting activities.

What is this?
It is a excellent website with much resources and various online quizzes with printable versions. It is beneficial for both teachers and learners.

Why is the content good for English learning?
  • The quizzes can also be downloaded and printed out as PDF files.
  • There are a wide range of topics: quiznet, crossword, wordmasters, and games "called beat the master". Some quizzes aims to improve learners' spelling ability, while some of them covers grammar as well as vocabulary.
  • The quizzes are updated as least twice a month. Teachers can always have different materials to use. Besides, the quiznet archive is well-organized, which makes teachers easily find the materials  they need.
  • What's better, most questions in the quiznet provides feedback no matter the learner chooses a correct or wrong answer. Students can learn while doing the quizzes.
  • Most quizzes are short, which only takes less than 10 minutes. It can been used as a motivating activity in a class.
  • The layout is clear and motivating. Learners might do the quizzes without teachers' instructions.
Classroom use
  • Teacher can use the quizzes in the category of quiznet either as a warm-up activity or as after-reading activity. For example, before/after teaching a text about coffee, teachers can have students do the quiz:
  • Take the article of Vincent van Gogh, which is also provided by BBC for example. Click here to read the article.  Teachers can have students read the article first and then play the game designed in relation to the article as comprehension questions.
  •
  Limitations
  • The quizzes are categorized based on the topics rather than the levels of difficulty.
  • BBC cannot keep a record of learners' learning progress.
  • The quizzes in quiznet don't have accompanying texts or worksheets. Teachers might have find other related texts for extensive reading or make their own worksheets on the specific grammar and vocabulary used in the quizzes so that students can learn more about the topics.
